Inspired by classic first-person shooter video games, Overwatch is the next generation of interactive gaming. Using Overwatch, all the technology gamers have come to love from combat and first-person shooter video games is now available right on their smartphone for airsoft and paintball matches.
Airsoft and Paintball gun manufacturers wanted to find a relevant way to tap into and convert combat video gamers to their sport. With the video game industry coming in at over $70B this represents a massive opportunity for paintball and airsoft manufacturers. The question was how to create a bridge between these two markets.
RevUnit brought the core elements of combat video games like GPS radar, live voice chat, in-game perks and player stats right to the user's smartphone via the Overwatch app. Now paintball and airsoft players can mount a smartphone directly to their gun for the most immersive, real-world gaming experience they've ever had.
In creating this one-of-a-kind product, several critical challenges had to be solved. For instance:
Designing a mobile experience meant to be attached to a gun while running, jumping, shooting and otherwise fighting for one's life.
Creating a scalable platform that could handle an infinite number of users in a single game.
Enabling accurate location and mapping signals to a multitude of devices.
Designing an easy to use interface that gave players access to a ton of tools while mounted to an airsoft rifle.
Enabling clear, battery-friendly, real-time voice chat over bluetooth earpieces.
With iPhone (and soon to be Android) in the appstore, Overwatch has received international acclaim and has been covered by some of today's leading tech publishers including TechCrunch, Engadget and Venturebeat. The app has received a steady 4+ stars in the app store and is the highest rated app of it's kind available anywhere. Through its partnership with Cybergun, the world's largest airsoft manufacturer, Overwatch will soon be selling hardware mounts and other gear in-stores.
